About Us

Carlos Moffat received a B.S. in Marine Biology from the University of Concepción, Chile, and a Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from the MIT-WHOI Joint Program. He was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Since early 2016, he has held a faculty position at the School of Marine Science and Policy at the University of Delaware.

His research interests span a range of problems in Coastal Physical Oceanography, including understanding the role the ocean plays in glacier retreat, the dynamics of river discharge to the continental shelf, and physical-biological interactions.

Graduate Students

Weiyang Bao joined the group in  September 2017. He's working on glacier-ocean interactions in Patagonia.

Frederike (Rike) Benz (2021-present) is studying buoyancy-forced currents and the coastal freshwater budget along the west Antarctic Peninsula shelf.

Jake Gessay (2022-present) is studying along-shore exchange processes along the Antarctic Peninsula.

Evan Quinter (2021-present) is studying storminess and penguins foraging behaviour in Antarctica.

Xin Wang (2017-present) is studying heat transport processes and glacier-ocean interactions in the west Antarctic Peninsula continental shelf.

Undergraduate Students

Michael Cappola (2021-present) is interested in the surface layer dynamics in Antarctica.

Prospective Students:

Research opportunities are available for highly-motivated students who are interested in joining the group. The University of Delaware offers a number of relevant undergraduate degrees as well as Masters and Ph.D. programs in Oceanography. Please read the prospective students section of the website, and feel free to contact me for currently available projects.
